Actor, artist, healthy POZ writer here from Maine.I was commissioned by Portland Stage Company to write/create a piece on the poet Longfellow for the Bicentennial of his birth..It has already been workshopped once and is being worked on again this coming May with a production goal in the fall of 2007 here and in Harvard/Boston and Bowdoin.I really would like to escape for at least a week this month for some quiet editing/writing time and/or some peace of mind...either commune of gay men or nude retreat or writing retreat or just a quiet place...I have a committment to a play(acting) for Nov/Dec but after that I could do a month or a few weeks somewhere....I have been under a crazed schedule as of late and have not had more than 3 days off in a row in 15 years,,need a mini spiritual boost...my partner committed suicide 6 years ago and I am starting to get out into the spiritual world of brothers again...any one know any gay retreats? a cheap ,cheap rental or work exchange anywhere? America, elsewhere? I will help work if is a commune or what ever,,,I need a break and not much money here until my grants come in (NEA etc) Laid back ...but high energy respected and well liked peaceful soul here...thanks Daniel

Re: ANY GAY MALE RETREATS? SPIRITUAL/ARTS/WRITERS? Communes?
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 8:20 AMHowdy,
There's a great gay men's nude campground (Cactus Canyon) in the south part of Arkansas, near Springfield... Not sure how "spiritual" it is, but very nice and relaxing.

Re: ANY GAY MALE RETREATS? SPIRITUAL/ARTS/WRITERS? Communes?
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 8:05 PMTake a look at Kalani Oceanside Retreat -- it's on the Big Island of Hawaii (in Puna - southeast of Hilo, right on the coast).
It has frequent spiritual and 'new-age' type retreats (at a cost of course), but they also seek both short term volunteers and artists in residence. I've stayed there several times as a guest, and have met some of the volunteers and resident artists / educators (dance, yoga, writing, astronomy, visual artists, naturalists, etc). There is no salary (esp for the volunteers) but you can choose how many hours a week you will work in order to off-set the expenses (food and housing). The founders are (were?) a gay male couple and there is a healthy respect for people of all ethnic, spiritual and gender/sexual preferences. The food is organic, fiber rich, and delicious -- in fact, working in the kitchen staff is one of the main volunteer jobs. Accommodation ranges from camping spots to rustic cabins or dorm-like rooms - you can choose (depending on how much you are willing to chip in for your 'living costs' share balanced with your workload.
You don't have to do join a retreat or work as a volunteer. You can just stay in the camp ground -- at $30 a day (you could probably negotiate a cheaper rate for longer stays because until a few months ago the campsite rental was $20 a night. Meals are $10, $15, $20 depending on time of day - limited hours for meals. A perk would be the clothing optional pool and jacuzzi/sauna area afer 5:00pm.
Finally, getting to Hawaii is not as expensive as it may seem -- Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha along with ATA (joint flights/codeshare with Southwest) offer deals. For example, currently Aloha Airlines is offering flights round-trip Kona or $149 for Oakland or Honolulu, and $199 to Hilo, which is the closest airport - at least that sale is good until Feb 28.
There are also inter-island deals for one-way flights from Honolulu or other cities across the islands from as low as $39. You can sometimes get cross-country deal (special discounted fares) to get yourself to Oakland (or Orange County, San Diego) via Southwest or other discounted airways or specials.
Kalani is located pretty far from town (Pahoa is the next town and Hilo is about 30 miles away -- it's the 2nd largest city in the state of Hawaii). So it's quiet, isolated, but they have the Internet and PC for use, plus you are only a few minutes walk from one of the most attractive (but small) black sand nudes beaches in the world (Kehena Black Sands Beach), where you can swim with dolphins or see humpback whales since they winter in the Hawaii islands.
I think it would great place to get some work done. I know it's already November but maybe this situation will happen again or there may be others who are looking for a gay-friendly retreat or volunteer experience in a wonderful natural environment.
